Having your URL as part of a comment on a related blog is good, but is there any SEO value in the words associated with the comment? Does saying “Such great work! Beautiful style!” have the same value as having the comment say “Such great wedding photos! Your photography has such beautiful style!”

Great question Brian, Absolutely. Google and other search engines can detect the content that surrounds the link. The content on the page, the anchor text and the text surrounding the link all suggest a context for what lies beyond the link (i.e. your website).
